Jeanie Senior 1828-1877 was the first woman civil servant when she was made Inspector of Workhouses reporting on the education of girls and what happened to after they left. She lived in Elm House which is the site of Battersea Town Hall. She was an accomplished singer, had a network of artistic and progressive friends
It was only in 1946 that the bar on married women in the civil service was lifted.
