Where we are

The Ancient Parish of Battersea has existed for at least 1300 years, with a Church at the Anglo-Saxon riverside settlement of Badrices Ieg (Badric’s Island) since c.800AD.

With minor variations, the borders of Battersea parish persisted as the Borough of Battersea until the reorganisation of London’s authorities in 1965 abolished Battersea as an independent borough and it became part of Wandsworth.  At a Local Government level, Battersea includes the St Mary’s Park, Queenstown, Latchmere, Shaftesbury and Northcote wards.

In 1983, the North Battersea and South Battersea parliamentary constituencies were merged into the Battersea parliamentary constituency. Marsha de Cordova (Lab) has been MP since 2017.

SW11 post codes fall within Battersea, as do a few SW8 and even SW4 post codes. Half of Clapham Common is in Battersea, although the borough of Lambeth is responsible for management of the entire common. Half of Wandsworth Common also falls within the boundary as does the area ‘between the Commons’ flanking the Northcote Road.

Isn’t Clapham Junction in Clapham?

Most confusingly, Clapham Junction station is in Battersea. The Victorian entrepreneurs who named that station wanted to borrow the cachet of wealthy Clapham and create distance from working-class Battersea. Their deceptive marketing ploy has led all too many ever since to believe anything near Clapham Junction must be in Clapham when in fact it’s in the heart of Battersea.
