A talk by local historian Jeanne Rathbone on two of the factories on the York House estate – the Orlando Jones Starch Company and Battersea Enamels. The Orlando Jones Starch Co was established in 1848 and was holder of a US patent for a process to manufacture starch from rice or corn that was used in laundering. Battersea enamelware was considered the finest of its kind to be produced in England during the mid-18th century and was especially noted for the high quality of its transfer printing.
The talk starts at 7pm.
