A talk by Sue Demont, one of the author/editors of The Wandsworth Common Story, on extraordinary Battersea polymath John Charles Buckmaster (1820-1908).
As a St Mary’s Churchwarden and a Battersea Vestry member, his crowning achievement was leading the fight to save Wandsworth Common from developers 150 years ago.
He earned further local and national fame for his teaching, his scientific knowledge, his grasp of environmental issues and even his cooking — despite starting full time work aged just 10 years old.
