backstreet – a firsthand account of childhood in a 1920s London slum is a collection of stories about Battersea, where a young Joyce Challis and her family lived in a tenement. Life then held many risks but the overriding (often humorous) message is that family and community commitment enabled a lively, happy childhood. This collection of Joyce’s stories has been compiled and edited by her son and daughter, Mike and Sue Challis, who will be speaking. Local historian Jeanne Rathbone will put the stories in backstreet into context with a brief overview of Battersea’s social history.
