New Members’ Meeting

Jenny Sheridan

Fifteen new members who joined the Society in the last two years were welcomed to a special introductory event at the Don Bosco Centre on Surrey Lane on 31 March. They heard first from Society chair, Michael Jubb, about the structure and work of the organisation and his part in the Glassmill appeal.

The new members then learned about our work enhancing and protecting Battersea’s celebrated (and less well-known) open spaces and how we work with the Council and with other local societies to promote interest in the area’s heritage. Planning was a major topic of interest, especially the much-hated Glassmill tower – our planning committee has played an important role in opposing it.

Events the Society organises – from coffee mornings to talks on art or history – were outlined and the ways we communicate with members and others described, including social media and our quarterly magazine Battersea Matters.

Suitably enlightened but not overly burdened by too much information, all repaired to the bar for a glass of wine or cordial and some rather good nibbles. In line with Battersea Society members’ taste for good company, all nibbled and nattered and mingled very happily until it was time to leave.

‘I never knew the Society did so much’ was one comment from a new member.
