A year ago today, 20 September 2021, the new Battersea Power Station station was opened. Major construction on the 3km twin-tunnel Northern Line extension between Kennington and Battersea Power Station, via Nine Elms Station, began in 2015. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, the construction project stayed on track. The new station at Battersea, which sits in the shadow of the iconic Power Station, opens onto Battersea Park Road.

Inside, Art on the Underground's major new permanent artwork by London-based Brazilian artist Alexandre da Cunha - titled 'Sunset, Sunrise, Sunset' - stretches to over 150m in length inside the ticket hall of the new station, which at 2,225m², could fit 80 electric double decker buses side-by-side. The ultra-modern Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms stations, both opened on 20 September, were the first new Tube stations on the Northern Line in 80 years.

The event was celebrated the following weekend with the Line of Light festival, a series of light installations, soundscapes and events following above ground the tunnels linking the two additions to the Northern Line.
