Old Battersea Village Walk

  • Battersea Bridge Road London, SW10 0DQ United Kingdom (map)

Join Jeanne Rathbone for walk through one of Battersea's most historic areas, in aid of Katherine Low Settlement

This heritage-packed walk from Battersea Bridge to Old Battersea House will be led by Jeanne Rathbone, member of the Heritage Committee and author of Inspiring Women of Battersea.

On the walk you’ll learn about Marc Brunel’s sawmills, Morgan Crucible, Brian Barnes’ mural on Morgan’s Wall, the Manor House and former flour mills. You’ll see St Mary’s Church, Battersea Square, the former Sir Walter St John’s School on Battersea High Street, the site of the studio of distinguished sculptor Ian Walters, Katherine Low Settlement, Vicarage Crescent and the plaque to polar explorer Edward Wilson. The walk will finish at Old Battersea House, which housed the De Morgan collection thanks to Wilhelmina Stirling who is honoured by a plaque on the site.

Recognized with a Wandsworth Council Civic Award in 2023 for their work with children and families from refugee backgrounds, KLS are a long-standing partner of ours and we want to support the outstanding work of this Battersea mainstay in their centenary year. They urgently need our help to make their creaking and quirky building more accessible, sustainable and welcoming. All proceeds from the walk will be donated to their KLS 100 Building Appeal.

The walk will take about 2 hours and is mostly level. Meet at the sculpture by the SW end of Battersea Bridge. We suggest a donation of £10 for the walk. Please register in advance.
