26 Old Chesterton Building: 2017/5162

The Battersea Society object strongly to this application for the construction of a dormer roof extension and terrace with glazed screen.

The conversion of the former London School Board school was sensitively undertaken and retained the original roof lines and profile of the building. This extension is totally out of character and does not meet objectives of DMS 1a - c in that it is:

  • not integrated into the original design of the building and would be clearly visible from street level;

  • detracts from the local character of the area including the adjacent Kingsway Square building and the streets to the rear in the Battersea Park Conservation Area; and

  • its use is likely to give rise to neighbour nuisance and loss of privacy for adjacent flats.

We also note that yet again zinc is proposed as a cladding which we consider inappropriate for extensions visible from the street in this part of Battersea.  It does not complement the original materials in the area and has given rise to local objection, as in Frere Street.

We therefore urge that this application is refused.
