The Battersea Society objects to this application which, it appears from the scant information given, fails to provide a public commemoration of the former Castle Public House.

The response and subsequent campaign against the closure of the Castle demonstrate the value the local community attached to the public house. Not only has the development removed a local asset, but it has wiped out a piece of local history: the Castle was one of only a handful of locations in Wandsworth to have had a public house on the site continuously for a number of centuries. To reflect that heritage, the Council has rightly asked the developers to ensure the local heritage is commemorated, by preserving the pub sign and marking the site.

At present, there is no public commemoration of the Castle and the pub sign is not displayed. The proposal offered is to keep the sign in what looks like an internal stairwell within the building. This in no way marks the building as the site of the former Castle Public House, nor commemorates what has been an important heritage asset within the community.

On that basis we would recommend rejecting the proposal in favour of a more appropriate way of reflecting the history of the site and its former role.
