Planning Committee Submission

Submission to Wandsworth Borough Council
Added on: 10 September 2018 at 12:13:22

115 Battersea High Street, 2018/4006

The Battersea Society objects strongly to this application to waive the condition that the heritage of the Castle Public House is properly honoured on site, and in a manner visible to all.

While the 1960s building was of itself undistinguished there had been a licensed premises on the site since before 1714 (Survey of London, Battersea, Part 1 p.259) and the Council quite properly set the condition that:

The development must ensure the safekeeping of the historic carved inn sign that was retained from the former Castle pub on the site and the stone dedicatory plaque. Details of their restoration and proposed reinstatement either on or within the approved public house shall be submitted to and approved by the local planning authority within 3 months of the opening of the new public house or Class D1 use.

In order to preserve the most significant remaining elements of the historic development of the site in accordance with policy DMS2. (September 2017).

It appears that currently both the plaque and the barrel sign are out of view and this should be rectified with immediate effect.

We are very disappointed that this Battersea based developer should seek to waive this condition rather than honouring the heritage of the site. We trust that they will withdraw this application and fulfil the condition without further delay. Failing that, Wandsworth Council should refuse the application and seek enforcement of the above condition
