Battersea Arts Centre SW11 5TN: 2018/5127 and 5136

The Battersea Society welcomes and supports these applications which will substantially enhance the areas surrounding the Arts Centre. We welcome in particular the commitment from the Centre to maintain the area, and in particular the horticultural elements, with some community involvement.

We regret that it will not be possible to re-use the damaged stone flags currently in front of the Centre, but we acknowledge the additional costs that would be involved. We also regret that it is planned to retain one of the two shipping containers on Town Hall Road as a theatre store. Given the size of the buildings available at the Centre, it seems odd that suitable storage space cannot be found internally. Finally, we are a little surprised by the plans to pave the entrance to Town Hall Road from Lavender Hill with stone flags, since this entrance will be used by lorries servicing the Centre, and we have already seen the damage that lorries have caused to the existing stone flags in front of the Centre. The architects may wish to revisit this aspect of the proposals.

Notwithstanding these reservations, we strongly support the proposals, and hope that the Planning Application Committee will do so too
