Planning Committee Submission

Submission to Wandsworth Borough Council

Telephone Box outside 164 Falcon Road 2017/5850

The Battersea Society objects to this application, one of 17 so far received in Battersea and, we read, one of 75 proposed throughout Wandsworth.

This is a very highly trafficked area of pavement, a route through from Clapham Junction station to the bus stop just north of the phone box and highly unsuitable for people to congregate.  The current phone box provides a contained space with no evidence provided that it is a hot spot for anti-social behaviour.  Furthermore there are further applications for sites outside Asda (2) and around the corner between this site and the station outside 8 to 10 St. John’s Hill and outside 14-16 St. John’s Hill.

This appears to us to be a proposal to install advertising sites for private gain by replacing relatively unobtrusive, if unused, phone boxes with highly visible illuminated advertising hoardings.  This will debase rather that ‘declutter the street scene’.

We question the use which will be made of this given the number of people with mobile phones and the relatively unattractive venue provided for any sustained internet use this pillar will provide.

There is no evidence given from previous installations that this will be used and we very much hope that this, and the 74 other applications, will be rejected.
