Towards a new London Plan

The Mayor issued last month a consultation paper setting out key issues for the future of London and how they might be addressed in a new London Plan, to replace the previous Plan that was approved by the last Government in 2021. The fundamental issue the new Plan will need to address is how to meet the current Government’s requirement that 88k new homes should be built in London each year, more than twice as many as have been built in each of the past five years.

The issues that the new Plan will have to address focus on the kinds of housing that will be required and where they will be built (how many of the new homes will be allocted to Wandsworth has yet to be decided); a focus on affordable housing, especially for social rent; the use of the industrial land remaining in London; town centres and their future; provision of open spaces, play areas and facilities for sport and recreation; transport including roads, rail, public transport and transport hubs to support new developments; key aspects of the London economy and how to support them; adapting to climate change; and many others.

The Society will respond in detail to the many questions included in the consultation; and a digest of that response along with links to the full document will be posted on this website.
