Transport minister gives £64 million for new tube link from Clapham Junction
Transport Minister Geoff Hoon has announced a £64 million package to link Clapham Junction directly to Docklands and the City. Four trains an hour will go from Platform 2 via Clapham North, Peckham, Canada Water and Shoreditch to Highbury.
Battersea MP Martin Linton, who has been campaigning for this link for ten years, said he was delighted the scheme has finally got the go-ahead. The trains will be part of London Overground and will link up with London Underground’s East London Line at Surrey Quays.
The announcement was made at Clapham Junction by Geoff Hoon, Mayor Johnson and Martin Linton MP.
“People have been complaining that Clapham Junction’s not on the tube for the last 100 years. It’s taken a lot of work, but now we are going to have it in time for the Olympics.” The minister praised the local MP's persistence : “The East London Line would not be happening without the determined efforts of Martin Linton”
