Issues of Concern

Battersea Town Centre
Battersea Town CentreThe Society is very concerned at the lack of coherent policies for Battersea Town Centre and the adjoining Clapham Junction station. Despite the questionable features of their ideas the developers continue to call the shots over redevelopment of the Station Approach. Meanwhile the Council's own proposals for street improvements bear no relation to the developer’s scheme or to Network Rail’s plans for improving access to the station or even to the Council’s own aspirations for sites in Falcon Lane.

Major issues not being properly addressed include interchange between buses and trains, the north side of the station and the much less convenient new entrance being planned there, and integrating new development with the existing shopping centre in St. John’s Road. We have written to the Leader of the Council pressing him to ensure that proposals for this key area are coherent and compatible, and asking what plans the Council has to carry out meaningful consultation rather than partial and misleading exercises like those on street improvements.

Battersea Power Station
Battersea Power StationThe Planning Committee is continuing to devote much time and effort to the future of the Power Station. We are delighted at its re-grading,
demonstrating further recognition of its significance. However we remain vigilant over its condition.

Tony Tuck, as chair of the Society, has written to the chief executive of English Heritage expressing concern about its current
state and the possible effect on it of special effects for the filming of Batman movies. The current owners, Treasury Holdings, have issued a
contract for essential maintenance. We look forward to seeing evidence of this work having been started.

Bus Service Review
Transport for London (TfL) has circulated a list of the routes to be retendered
to ask for any initial comments. We have responded asking them to address problems with frequency and overcrowding on the 344; we also noted the merits of both the 239 and 345 routes.
